Mary Gertrude Black, 25, housewife, saved Ruth E. and Beulah B. Balderree, 16 and 11 respectively, from drowning, Sampson, Oregon, July 23, 1904. Mrs. Black, encumbered by four skirts, waded into Schofield Creek, pulled one girl out of a hole 8 feet deep, and then, followed by her dog, swam into the hole for the other girl.
