Mary Heidcamp, 25, forewoman, saved Mary A. Geoghegan, 51, from an explosion, Port Ewen, New York, November 8, 1918. Mrs. Geoghegan and Miss Heidcamp were caught in an explosion in a factory in which parts of hand grenades were made, and they were blown out of the building. A heavier explosion followed, and then there were numerous small explosions. Pieces of metal and wood were flying in all directions, and the factory was burning. A large quantity of explosives in a shipping room had not yet exploded. Although severely injured, Miss Heidcamp ran 20 feet to Mrs. Geoghegan, who lay seriously injured 10 feet from the building, and dragged her 300 feet out of the range of the small explosions. A man then assisted her in taking Mrs. Geoghegan farther from the factory. Then the shipping room blew up. Three persons were killed, and 35 were injured. Miss Heidcamp and Mrs. Geoghegan recovered from their injuries. 19358-1606
