Mary M. Young, 28, housewife, saved Byron T. Cline, 4, from burning, Kansas City, Missouri, December 20, 1917. Byron was in a bedroom on the third floor of Mrs. Young’s rooming house when a fire started from an oil stove. An older girl and three other children left the room and gave an alarm. Mrs. Young ascended from the first floor to the room, crawled under a dense layer of smoke and on a bed, part of the bedding of which was burning, to Byron, who lay at the side of the bed 10 feet from the door. She returned to the door with him and then became bewildered, and her husband drew her out of the room. Mrs. Young’s hands and face were blistered, and she suffered somewhat from having inhaled smoke. 18656-1640
