Mary V. Hughes attempted to save Elizabeth A. Dickison from drowning, Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, January 9, 1916. (See case of SAMUEL J. T. CONOVER.) Mrs. Hughes, 33, housewife, who had seen another person break through the ice earlier, ran from the bank with a coiled clothesline. It was dark, and Mrs. Hughes was not aware that another person was attempting to rescue Miss Dickison, 21. When she was 100 feet from the bank, she broke through the ice into water 40 feet deep. She failed in repeated efforts to get onto the ice, and after she had been in the water for five minutes, she was rescued by a young man and her sister. 18787-1383
