Matthew B. Ross, 56, crossing watchman, died attempting to save Katherine P. Brown, 17, from being killed by a train, Marseilles, Illinois, January 29, 1926. Katherine stepped onto a track without noting the approach of a train, which was running at a speed of 12 m.p.h. She fell between the rails on an icy boardwalk when the train was 50 feet from her. Ross ran to her from the side of the track, and as he was stooping over her, both were struck by the locomotive and killed. 26055-2073
