Matthew D. Cauble saved Leota D. Gunther from burning, Chillicothe, Ohio, December 16, 1943. Mrs. Gunther, 23, who was unable to walk, was in bed in a rear room on the second floor of a frame house when the house caught fire. When the entire roof was ablaze, flames rising 15 feet at the rear, Cauble, 38, meat cutter, who was not familiar with the arrangement of the interior, entered the front door and was asked by a woman to carry Mrs. Gunther outside. Cauble followed the woman up a stairway to a hallway on the second floor, where she pointed the way to Mrs. Gunther’s room. Running through an adjoining room, Cauble entered Mrs. Gunther’s room. Wrapping a quilt around Mrs. Gunter, he carried her and walked rapidly to the stairway and descended. Before he reached the foot, the roof and ceilings of Mrs. Gunther’s room and adjoining rooms crashed to the second floor. Cauble carried Mrs. Gunther outside; and the other woman, who had been struck by an ember, followed him out. Flames destroyed the entire second floor of the house. 40304-3401
