Matthew T. Silvia helped to save Kimberly A. Scholle from drowning, Narragansett, Rhode Island, May 7, 1989. Kimberly, 15, was on the rocky shore of the Atlantic Ocean when she was swept into the water by a large wave. Carried away from shore, she shouted for help. A friend who was nearby, Matthew, 17, high school student, jumped into the water after her. Despite the rough waves, Matthew swam to Kimberly, grasped her, and began to swim back toward shore. En route, they were met by a youth who had obtained a life ring that was attached to a rope. Holding to the ring, Matthew, Kimberly, and the youth swam and were pulled the remaining distance to shore, where they were helped out of the water by others. Kimberly was treated at the hospital for hypothermia; she recovered. Matthew recovered from scrapes to his legs.
