Matthew Walsh, 45, laborer, died as the result of attempting to save James E. Kelly, 39, laborer, from suffocation, Boston, Massachusetts, August 12, 1909. Walsh went to the rescue of Kelly, who had been overcome by sewer gas at the bottom of a 12-foot manhole, and fell unconscious upon Kelly. He revived a few minutes later and climbed to the surface. From the effects of the gas and sewer water, sickness resulted from which he died about a month later. 4257-334
