Mattie Youngs Woods, 31, housewife, saved Moses L., 4, Hershel, 3, and James E. Adkisson, 15 months, from burning, Conway, Arkansas, May 6, 1950. Moses and his brothers Hershel and James were asleep in a bedroom of a one-story frame house when flames broke out at a wall near their bed. Mrs. Woods seeing flames through the bedroom window ran 100 feet to the house and from the front door entered a hallway adjacent to the bedroom. She opened the door and saw Moses standing near the bed, which Hershel and James still occupied. Flames covered the ceiling and walls and rose in places from the bed, and heat was intense. She stepped into the room, grasped Moses, and thrust him into the hallway to Mrs. Woods, who bad suffered burns, crouched and shielding her face with her arms stepped backward to the bed. She took hold of Hershel and James and pulled them to the floor, which was free of flames. She dragged the children seven feet to the door and thence into the hallway and accompanied by Moses carried them outside. Firemen extinguished the flames. Mrs. Woods sustained bums of the head, arm, leg, and shoulder which healed. 41993-3693
