Maurice Buckley, 73, crossing watchman, died saving Byron V., 13, and Mary E. Bohnstedt, 10, from being run over by a train, Olney, Illinois, September 26, 1912. Byron and Mary started to cross a track on which, unnoticed by them, two locomotives coupled together were backing toward them at a speed of 15 m.p.h. Buckley, who was southeast of them, saw their danger and walked toward them, waving his arms. The children saw him and stepped back just in time to escape being struck, but Buckley was struck and died of his injuries within two hours.
