Maurice E. Bailey saved Robert J. Andrews and David M. Zimmerman from drowning, Elyria, Ohio, February 20, 1974. When Robert, 10, and David., 3, broke through ice that covered the Black River, they held to the edge of the hole about 30 feet from the nearest bank and called for help. Bailey, 26, sheet metalworker, was attracted and crawled on the ice to the hole; but when he tried to pull Robert from the water, the ice broke. Bailey fell into the enlarged hole, where he supported both boys and tried in vain to lift them from the water. By submerging and pushing upward on Robert and David, Bailey succeeded in setting them onto the ice. The boys ran to the bank; but Bailey was unable to get out of the hole. Other help arrived, including firemen who removed Bailey from the water. 53970-6143
