Max Y. Ripley saved Ida E. Redmond from drowning, Ripley Springs, Virginia, August 9, 1921. Miss Redmond, 26, stepped into water nine feet deep as she was wading in Craig Creek about 60 feet from the bank and gradually lost consciousness. Ripley, 40, clerk, was recuperating from an illness and was weak. Fully dressed, he took a leaky boat from the bank toward Miss Redmond, paddling it with his hands. Another girl and a man, who had also got into difficulty in deep water within 25 feet of Miss Redmond, grasped the boat for support as Ripley passed near them and caused it to sink. Ripley then plunged from the boat and swam to Miss Redmond. He took hold of her, and as he swam with her, he felt his strength waning and called for help. He swam 25 feet to within a few feet of wadable water, and a chain of bathers then drew them to wadable water. Ripley was gasping for breath and was in a state of collapse, but he recovered. Miss Redmond was revived. 21758-1770
