Maxie L. Smith, 19, schoolgirl, attempted to save E. Frances Wilbanks, 18, from drowning, Powder Springs, Georgia, July 1, 1929. While Miss Wilbanks was swimming in a lake, she got into distress in water eight feet deep 25 feet from the bank. Miss Smith swam 20 feet to her. Miss Wilbanks, who was threshing wildly, grabbed Miss Smith, pushed her under the surface, and climbed upon her back. Miss Smith was unable to free herself. A young man swam to them and pulled Miss Wilbanks from Miss Smith, who feebly swam 20 feet to wadable water and was helped to the bank. She was exhausted temporarily. Miss Wilbanks was saved by another girl.
