Maxime C. Bergeron, 37, machine operator, died as the result of attempting to save J. Ferdinand Ladurantaye, 76, retired laborer, from burning, Waterloo, Quebec, December 20, 1949. Fire broke out at night in a one-room cabin occupied by Ladurantaye. Bergeron was attracted by flames rising five feet above the roof and ran 45 feet to the cabin. He entered and began to grope through dense smoke and flames which filled the interior, the door closing behind him. Approximately a minute later, Bergeron, who had been unable to find Ladurantaye, opened the door and fell prone in the doorway, his legs remaining in the flames. He was dragged from the doorway by his wife. He was severely burned and died the following day. Ladurantaye died in the fire. The cabin was destroyed by flames. 3685-42091
