Maynard T. Dean, 34, engine mechanic, died attempting to save Charles N. Messer, 6, from drowning, Tyler, Texas, July 23, 1943 . Charles fell from a boat, which Dean was paddling on Pinkerton Lake, and was submerged in water 11 feet deep 90 feet from the bank. Dean, who was fully clothed and who suffered from tuberculosis and had an artificial leg, jumped into the water and grasped Charles by the arm. The boat moved 15 feet from their position. Both were briefly submerged, Dean still holding Charles by the arm and Charles having his arms around Dean’s neck. Again both were submerged and did not come to the surface. A man who swam from the bank pushed the boat to a point above Dean and Charles. He and another man who swam from the bank got hold of Charles and Dean and placed them in the boat. Charles was soon revived. Dean could not be revived. 39945-3357
