Melvin G. Bartels, 14, student, died attempting to save Margaret B. Hutchinson, 7, from drowning, Goshen, Indiana, July 3, 1924. (See case of LEWIS A. MILLER.) Margaret drifted 350 feet with the current. Melvin, who wore all his clothes except a shirt, swam 80 feet to her. She grasped him around the head or neck, and they were submerged. They rose separated. Melvin again sank immediately and was drowned. Margaret floated a few feet farther and then sank and was drowned. 24364-2068
