Merrill W. Roscoe, 13, student, saved Maud E. Keener, 21, and A. Elise Billing, 23, from drowning, Whitehouse, Ohio, August 7, 1916. Miss Keener, who could not swim, accidently waded into water over her depth in the John Ryan Quarry Pond. Miss Billing waded to extend a hand to her and went into the deep water. Miss Keener grasped her, and they went under the surface, rose, and threshed. Merrill swam 15 feet from shallow water to Miss Keener, took hold of her, and swam with her to shallow water. After waiting a moment to get his breath, Merrill swam 15 feet to Miss Billing and put his arm around her waist. She sank, drew him down with her, and put her arm around his neck. He tried to swim to the surface with her but did not have sufficient strengh. He then swam under the surface and took Miss Billing 15 feet to shallow water. 17010-1544
