Merritt Belle Isle, Jr., attempted to save Harold F. Turner from drowning, Boston, Massachusetts, November 29, 1978. While walking on the ice-covered Charles River, Harold, 16, broke through and floundered in deep water. Taking with him a rope, Belle Isle, 24, refrigeration mechanic, went to Harold’s aid but also broke through. He then broke his way to the hole in the ice where Harold meanwhile had gone under. Belle Isle submerged several times but could not find Harold. Nearly exhausted, Belle Isle then was pulled to the bank by means of the rope. Harold drowned. 56709-6447
