Michael A. Sigalas rescued Leslie H. Anderson from burning, Smartville, California, June 13, 1997. Anderson, 48, was trapped inside her burning pickup truck, which had overturned onto its driver’s side in a highway accident. Sigalas, 32, editor and college instructor, approached the scene in his vehicle. He immediately ran to the pickup, the cab of which was filled with flames that extended through the open passenger window, which was then on top of the wreckage. Sigalas climbed atop the pickup then crouched, reached through the window, and grasped Ms. Anderson by the arms. He pulled Ms. Anderson, who was aflame, through the window, then released her to the pavement. Sigalas then jumped from the truck and helped to extinguish the flames on her. Ms. Anderson required lengthy hospitalization for treatment of extensive and severe burns. Sigalas sustained minor burns and other injury, from which he recovered.
