Michael Alex Chelik died attempting to save Dorothy C. Chelik from burning, North Arlington, New Jersey, January 19, 1992. Mrs. Chelik, 70, was in her second-floor apartment when fire erupted in the living room early in the morning. Her husband, 72, retired mechanic, who had gone to a store, returned home to find flames issuing from the apartment’s front windows. Despite being warned by a neighbor not to enter the burning building, Chelik hurried inside. A fire chief and police officers who arrived shortly located Mrs. Chelik in the apartment’s smoke-filled kitchen and removed her to safety. She was hospitalized for smoke inhalation and died of the injury three months later. Chelik was found by firefighters in one of the apartment’s bedrooms; he died of effects of the fire.
