Michael Andrew Bray saved Ruby L. Calhoun and two others from suffocation, Dallas, Texas, September 27, 1971. Fire broke out in the living room of a dwelling where Ruby, 21 months, was on the second floor with her grandmother and a 13-year-old girl. Smoke issuing from the house attracted Bray, 22, telephone lineman. He entered the dwelling and ascended an enclosed stairway. In the upstairs hall, to which the smoke had spread, he picked up Ruby. Heat was intense. Finding the girl in one bedroom, Bray told her to follow him as he went to the other bedroom to get the grandmother. By then the flames had burned through the floor of the bedroom. Carrying the grandmother under his other arm while the girl held to his belt, Bray returned to the stairs. Smoke and heat were increasing. Bray could not see the bottom of the stairway, but he descended it with Ruby, her grandmother, and the girl and emerged with them from the dwelling. 53004-6002
