Michael Anthony Oliver rescued Billy A. Hoskins and Loretta D. and Darryl L. Sanders from burning, Cordele, Georgia, January 19, 1983. Billy, 10, Loretta, 12, and Darryl, 10, were in the bedroom of their house when fire broke out in an adjoining room. Oliver, 23, unemployed auto mechanic, kicked in the front door of the house to enter, but he was knocked down by a backflash. He then kicked in the back door and, despite dense smoke and intense heat, entered the house. Locating Billy and Loretta, he removed them from the house, then entered the bedroom through a window which he broke. As conditions worsened, Oliver located Darryl, who was unconscious, and removed him through the window. Oliver and the children were hospitalized for smoke inhalation. They recovered.
