Michael D. Terry, Sr., helped to save Ronald D. Rawlings from drowning, Omaha, Nebraska, March 21, 1993. Ronald, 9, broke through ice on a lagoon in Benson Park and fell into the cold water. From nearby, Terry, 28, carpenter, saw him fall and, with his wife, immediately began to walk out on the ice toward him. En route, Terry also broke through the ice and fell into the water. As his wife continued to Ronald, Terry threw her a length of rope that he had been carrying, and she used it to pull Ronald out of the water. Firefighters arrived shortly. They threw one end of a rope to Terry and pulled him through the water and ice back to the bank. They then removed Ronald and Terry’s wife from the ice. Ronald and Terry and his wife were taken to the hospital, where they were treated for hypothermia and scrapes. They recovered.
