Michael Davis saved Tamara L. Gus from drowning, Morris, New York, April 25, 1996. After Ms. Gus, 22, lost control of the automobile she was driving, the vehicle left the road and entered a pond. The car floated to the center of the spring-fed pond, where water was about 10 feet deep. Davis, 38, foreman on the farm where the pond was located, responded to the scene. Despite a history of back problems which resulted in restrictions on his activities, Davis entered the frigid water and swam to the car. He broke out the driver’s window, and the car began to sink rapidly. Davis reached through the window, grasped Ms. Gus, and pulled her out of the car as it submerged. They then returned to the bank, where they were treated for exposure to the cold water. They recovered.
