Michael E. Caywood, Jr., rescued Stanley W. Gardipee from assault, Busby, Montana, August 22, 1991. Gardipee, 56, police officer, was attempting to arrest two youths at a house in a rural area when he was shot and critically wounded by one of them from inside the house. Under the cover of his vehicle and bleeding heavily, he called for help to Caywood, 23, heavy equipment operator, who was watching the incident from his residence nearby. With the gunfire continuing, Caywood immediately drove to the scene. Placing his vehicle in the 20-foot space between Gardipee’s and the figuring house, Caywood stopped and opened his vehicle’s passenger door. He helped Gardipee inside, then backed his vehicle a short distance and sped away to seek medical attention for him. The youths fled the scene but turned themselves in to authorities three days later. Gardipee required a two-week hospital stay for treatment of his wounds.
