Michael G. Martinez died after saving an unidentified woman from drowning, Miami Beach, Florida, May 29, 1989. Martinez, 40, who was disabled by heart disease, and his nephew were at an Atlantic Ocean beach when two unidentified women floundered in the surf. As the nephew swam to one of the women and took her to shore, he saw Martinez enter the water, swim past them, and arrive at the other woman. Although his heart condition necessitated restrictions on his activities, Martinez grasped the woman and towed her back to wadable water. After leaving the water, Martinez suffered a heart attack. He could not be revived.
