Michael J. McLaughlin attempted to save Michael J. Reagan and Charles E. Murray from suffocation, Leominster, Massachusetts, October 6, 1924. McLaughlin, 60, labor foreman, wearing a gas mask that was not properly adjusted and of no benefit to him, entered the manhole on the ladder and fastened a clothes line to Reagan, 39, laborer, and shoved him up as men at the top drew him out of the manhole. McLaughlin climbed the ladder, took a breath, and descended again. He tried to fasten the clothes line to Murray, 65, laborer, but the gas began to affect him, and he climbed the ladder. When near the top, he grew very weak and would have fallen but for men at the top, who caught him and lifted him out. He was semiconscious but revived. (See case of LOUIS L. LAMBERT.) 25874-2020
