Michael John Doyle saved Akke Plakmeyer from a runaway automobile, Whitby, Ontario, April 9, 1992. Ms. Plakmeyer, 59, was semi-conscious in her subcompact car, which was traveling out of control in circles after a highway accident at an intersection. The passenger of a vehicle stopped at the intersection, Doyle, 31, sheet metal mechanic, assessed the situation, then went inside the circle created by the runaway car. He approached the driver’s door of the car and dived partially through its open window. Doyle put the gearshift lever into park, and the car stopped. Ms. Plakmeyer was hospitalized nine days for treatment of extensive injuries sustained in the accident.
