Michael L. Astin rescued Steven B. Davis from assault, Riverdale, Georgia, June 24, 1990. Davis, 30, police officer, struggled with a woman in the emergency room of a hospital after the woman, who was in his custody, attempted to leave the hospital. During the struggle, the woman grasped Davis’s revolver and removed it from its holster. Astin, 31, truck driver, who was nearby, saw the struggle and approached the assailant, who outweighed both him and Davis. Astin grasped the assailant’s hands and attempted to pry them from the revolver, during which time the assailant fired twice. After Astin was then successful in loosening the assailant’s grasp on the revolver, Davis removed it from her. Astin, Davis, and others then secured the assailant. Davis sustained powder burns, abrasions, and minor nerve damage to his left hand. He was treated at the scene, and he recovered. Astin recovered from a minor scratch to his left hand.
