Michael L. Barrow died attempting to save Ryan M. Harrison and Kyle R. Phippen from drowning, Omaha, Nebraska, February 18, 1995. Ryan, 11, and Kyle, 12, broke through ice on Carter Lake at points about 250 feet from the nearer bank. They yelled for help. Those responding to the bank included Barrow, 33, house painter. Picking up a branch en route, Barrow walked across the ice toward the boys. Reaching the area where they had broken through, Barrow himself fell through the ice. Kyle was then successful in pulling himself from the water, and he made his way back to the bank as authorities were arriving. A fire department battalion chief and two police officers maneuvered onto the ice; they too fell through in a rescue attempt but managed to pull themselves back onto solid ice. Barrow submerged, as had Ryan; both were recovered by divers about an hour later. Barrow had drowned, and Ryan survived until the following day. Kyle required hospital treatment but fully recovered.
