Michael R. Howell saved a woman from drowning, Spokane, Washington, March 19, 1984. A 63-year-old woman who could not swim was caught in the swift current of the Spokane River. Howell, 38, fruit farm foreman, waded into the river and swam to her. As the woman was sinking, Howell pulled her to the surface and swam with her to a tree near the bank at a point about a quarter-mile downstream from where he had entered the water.
