Michael S. Weatherhead helped to save Janelle A. Clark from drowning, Jefferson, Maine, May 3, 1988. Janelle, 7, was knocked off her feet and carried away by the swift current of a stream near her home. She grasped a boulder in the middle of the stream and clung to it. Weatherhead, 32, mental health aid, was alerted to Janelle’s plight. Although he was partially paralyzed from a childhood stroke, Weatherhead descended the steep gorge to the stream and, despite its cold water and strong current, waded to Janelle. He grasped her, then handed her to another man who had arrived. Janelle was removed from the stream and taken to the hospital, where she was treated for hypothermia and bruises. She recovered.
