Mildred F. Davis died after attempting to rescue William E. Swafford from a runaway vehicle, New Castle, Indiana, July 23, 1991. William, 2, was in a pickup truck parked in the driveway of his parents’ home when the truck began to move backward toward the street. His grandmother, Mrs. Davis, 52,homemaker, was nearby, talking to his mother, when their attention was directed to the runaway truck. Mrs. Davis immediately ran to the driver’s side of the truck and put one foot inside, but she then fell to the pavement and was dragged into the street by the truck, which then ran over her. The truck continued to the opposite side of the street, where it stopped. William was not injured. Mrs. Davis was hospitalized for extensive injuries, from which she died nine days later.
