Milford M. Deitz, 39, building contractor, died attempting to save R. Douglas Reed, 17, mason’s helper, from drowning, Coreys, New York, June 29, 1950. A motorboat in which Reed, Deitz, and another man were riding on Upper Saranac Lake was swamped by waves and sank in deep water 265 feet from an island. Reed rose floundering, and the other man swam to the island. Fully clothed, Deitz emerged and swimming 10 feet to Reed towed him with much difficulty 75 feet toward the island. In advancing that distance Deitz and Reed several times became separated and submerged briefly. Within five minutes both sank and were drowned. Their bodies were recovered later that day. 42099-3725
