Miller Jones, 35, student, saved William I. Benson, 24, student, from drowning, Taylors, South Carolina, March 31, 1924. While Benson was paddling a canoe on Chick Springs Lake, he fell into water 10 feet deep at a point 137 feet from the bank. Almost fully clothed, Jones, who was suffering from a nervous affliction due to war service, jumped into the water from a dock a few feet from the bank and swam 135 feet to Benson. Benson grabbed Jones, and both went under the surface together. They rose, and Jones quickly jerked free and struck Benson on the jaw. Jones then towed him as he swam 30 feet toward the bank. A boat then reached him, and Jones, keeping hold of Benson, caught hold of the boat and was towed to the bank. Benson was semiconscious but was revived. Jones sustained a severe nervous shock and was ill for several days. 25091-2235
