Milton E. Bradford died attempting to help save John E. Ware from suffocation, Tuckerton, New Jersey, September 6, 1988. Ware, 24, was overcome by gas in the 10-foot-deep sewer shaft in which he was working. A co-worker, Bradford, 32, laborer, was alerted and immediately descended the shaft, joining a foreman who had entered to rescue Ware. As Bradford and the foreman were lifting Ware to a man at street level, they lost consciousness and collapsed. Ware, Bradford, and the foreman were shortly removed by others, and Ware and the foreman were revived. Attempts to revive Bradford were unsuccessful.
