Milton Mong Chappell, 33, collector, saved Edward D. Winder, 7, from drowning, Muncie, Indiana, January 22, 1918. Edward broke through the ice on the West Fork of the White River 75 feet from the bank, where the water was seven feet deep. Chappell ran to a bridge, dropped 16 feet to the ice, and went about 200 feet on the ice toward Edward. The ice began to crack, and Chappell moved cautiously to a point six to eight feet from Edward. Edward began to sink, and Chappell leaped into water beside him, seized him, and swam through broken ice to the edge of the unbroken ice and tried to put Edward on it, but the ice broke. He worked his way 100 feet indirectly toward the bank, swimming and holding to the ice, and then got a footing. He waded and broke ice toward the bank till he reached stronger ice and put Edward on it and got on it himself. 18650-1582
