Modis A. Smiley rescued Brenda J. and Robin D. Hardy from burning, Union, Mississippi, August 12, 1972. When their automobile was involved in an accident at night, and ended in an inverted position, Brenda, 24, and Robin, 15, sustained injuries and found themselves in upside-down positions. Flames broke out at the front of the vehicle. Smiley, 41, machine operator, arrived at the scene and crawled to a window of the automobile. He extended his head and arms inside and then pulled Brenda out. Crawling farther into the vehicle, Smiley started to remove Robin but found she was caught. By then there were flames at the rear of the automobile also. Bracing his knees against the vehicle, Smiley pulled forcibly on Robin and freed her. Soon after Smiley had removed Robin, the rear of the automobile was enveloped by flames. Brenda and Robin recovered.
