Mona F. Paulson, 18, schoolgirl, saved Charles G. Pusey, 52, electrical engineer, from drowning, Miami, Florida, December 20, 1954. Pusey climbed over a bridge railing and dropped 30 feet into deep water in the Miami River 90 feet from the bank. He twice was submerged and became inert, drifting face down in the water. Miss Paulson and numerous other persons were attracted and alighted from automobiles on the bridge. Removing her coat and shoes, Miss Paulson ran 300 feet to the end of the bridge and continued to the top of a sloping retaining wall at the bank 100 feet downstream from the bridge. She jumped six feet into the water and with effort swam 170 feet cross-current to Pusey. She obtained a hold on Pusey, who was 50 pounds heavier than Miss Paulson, and, drifting as she swam, towed him 200 feet to the retaining wall. A man climbed part way down the wall and extended a hand to Miss Paulson, who nearly was exhausted but continued supporting Pusey for 10 minutes until a tugboat arrived. Pusey and Miss Paulson were lifted onto the tugboat and thence to the bank. They were removed to a hospital, where Pusey was revived and Miss Paulson was treated for exposure. Both recovered. 43338-3984
