Morlan M. O’Bryan saved Nebulla Stephen from assault, Boston, Massachusetts, April 26, 1991. Nebulla, 9, and her younger brother were on the front porch of their next-door neighbor’s house when two groups of young men, one chasing the other, approached, running. When gunfire erupted, adults and other children at the scene sought cover, but Nebulla and her brother ran toward their home. A neighbor who had been near the porch before taking cover under its steps, O’Bryan, 33, warehouse clerk, shouted for them to get back. He then ran after them. O’Bryan put his arms around Nebulla and pulled her to him to shield her, then was shot in the back. The youths dispersed. O’Bryan required surgery and lengthy hospitalization for treatment of his wound, which left him paralyzed from the waist down.
