Morris Berger, 22, barber, helped to save Theodore R. Patton, 11, and died attempting to save Hyman Abel, 9, from drowning, New York, New York, December 31, 1912. Theodore and Hyman broke through the ice on Indian Lake in Crotona Park 20 feet from the bank. Berger and a companion approached them from the opposite bank, crossing 145 feet of thin ice. Berger grasped Theodore and pulled him partly out of the water, and then the ice broke, and all fell into the water. Berger’s companion crawled up on the ice, and Berger pushed Theodore up so that he could grasp Theodore and pull him out of the water. Berger then turned toward Hyman, who grabbed him around the neck. Both went beneath the surface and were drowned. 9764-806
