Murdoch Murray, 39, miner, helped to save Dennis Lynch, 53, repairman, and Stephen Hogan, 57, pumpman, from suffocation, Butte, Montana, January 14, 1911. Murray was one of a party of four, who made a trip to the pump station on the 1,000-foot level in search of Lynch and Hogan, who had been overcome by smoke from a fire in the mine. Though one man was overcome, Murray and the others went on to rescue Lynch and Hogan. After helping them to the cage, Murray attempted to arouse the rescuer who had succumbed. Being affected by the smoke, he went to the surface in a weakened condition. When the downed rescuer was gotten out, about 10 minutes after the rescue of Lynch and Hogan, he was dead. Lynch and Hogan were revived. 6652-534
