Murl Jay Sines rescued Ryan C., Angela C., and Leonard B. Thaut from burning, St. Maries, Idaho, November 19, 1988. Ryan, 1; his sister, Angela, seven weeks old; his father, Thaut, 22, and his mother were asleep in their mobile home when fire erupted in the living room at night. As the mother broke out a bedroom window for the family’s escape, Thaut removed Angela from another bedroom nearby, and when he did not appear at the window, the mother shouted for help. Alerted to the fire, Sines, 23, sawmill laborer, who lived nearby, drove to the scene and immediately climbed into the mobile home through the broken-out window. He grasped Ryan and handed him outside to safety. Unable to locate Angela or to breathe in the dense smoke, Sines then exited through the window. He re-entered shortly and located Angela, carrying her to the window and handing her out. Sines then lifted Thaut, who lay unconscious at the base of the window, outside to others before climbing out himself. Thaut and the children required hospital treatment for burns and smoke inhalation. Sines recovered from minor smoke inhalation.
