Nancy Martin Boston, 17, schoolgirl, saved Lottie L. Williams, 45, from drowning, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, August 18, 1949. While bathing in rough surf in the Atlantic Ocean, Miss Williams swam to a point 140 feet from shore where the water was eight feet deep and was unable to return to shore because of a strong undercurrent. She called for aid and attracted Nancy, who was swimming 65 feet away. Nancy, who had restricted use of one arm due to an accident suffered as a child, swam through swells four feet high to Miss Williams, who took hold of her shoulder. Nancy then towed Miss Williams slowly 90 feet to wadable water, where both stood and waded to shore. 3636-41796
