Nathan James Marling helped to save a boy from drowning, Mount Vernon, Iowa, June 19, 2011. A 6-year-old boy and his older brother were wading in the Cedar River close to the bank when they lost their footing and were pulled farther out and downstream by a strong current. A man who had been fishing at the scene and a woman from the boys’ party swam out to them in rescue attempts, but the boys struggled against them. As the woman took hold of the older boy and attempted to return him to the bank, Marling, 18, lifeguard, from another party at the scene, entered the water and swam out to the younger boy. He took him from the fisherman, who had submerged by then, but the boy struggled against him and submerged him repeatedly. Resurfacing, Marling calmed the boy and swam him to the bank. The older boy was likewise taken to safety, but the fisherman submerged and drowned.
