Nathan W. Tate, 13, schoolboy, saved Lowell B. Reece, 5, from being killed by a train, Decatur, Alabama, February 15, 1951. Lowell left an automobile parked near a railroad depot and walked along a track on which a passenger train was approaching at a speed of 15 m.p.h. Nathan ran 20 feet from the depot platform and took hold of him, but Lowell broke free and ran midway the rails toward the train. Sprinting 30 feet on concrete between the rails, Nathan overtook Lowell and grasped him at the shoulders when the locomotive was 30 feet from them. He dragged Lowell from the track, clearing the path of the locomotive when it was five feet from them. The locomotive passed at a slightly reduced speed and stopped 250 feet beyond them. 42200-3702
