Nathaniel B. Taylor, 11, schoolboy, died saving Philip C. Riddle, 8, from drowning, Baltimore, Maryland, May 17, 1959. Attempting to retrieve a ball, Philip entered a pool of water at the end of a culvert through which a small creek flowed. He slid into water beyond his depth and, unable to swim, began to flounder. He was submerged several times, swallowing much water, and called for help from other boys, 7 to 12, with whom he had been playing. Nathaniel, a very poor swimmer, entered the water without taking time to remove any of his clothing and swam to Philip, who then was five feet from the bank in water six feet deep. He moved behind Philip and pushed him forcibly, propelling him three feet toward the bank. One of the other boys extended a stick to Philip, who took hold of it and was drawn from the water. Nathaniel attempted to swim to the bank but could make no progress, and the stick was not long enough to reach him. Nathaniel was submerged briefly several times and then did not return to the surface. Police and firemen arrived and removed Nathaniel from the pool, but he could not be revived. Philip recovered. 44732-4308
