Nathaniel Watts, Jr., died attempting to help save Brozana S. Goodwin from drowning, Dauphin Island, Alabama, July 13, 1991. Miss Goodwin, 19, was wading in waist-deep water of the Gulf of Mexico just off the eastern tip of Dauphin Island when water currents pulled her farther out, into deeper water. Struggling and calling for help, she was observed by family members, including her stepfather, Watts, 43, warehouse worker, who was on shore, and her cousin. Watts swam toward her, but he submerged en route, and the cousin also submerged while attempting a rescue. Both drowned. A passing boater took Miss Goodwin to wadable water, from which she walked to shore.
