Nobuichi Kasahara helped to save Nancy E. Yonahara from drowning, Waimea, Hawaii, August 3, 1987. Nancy, 3, fell from a pier into the Pacific Ocean and floundered. Although he suffered heart disease, Kasahara, 65, retired powerhouse operator who was fishing from the pier, immediately jumped into the water fully clothed and swam to Nancy. With Nancy clinging to his neck, Kasahara began to swim to shore. After swimming about 100 feet, at which point they were yet about 120 feet from the shore, Kasahara became exhausted and called for help, and he submerged several times. A high school student swam from the beach to Kasahara and Nancy, obtained a hold on them, and towed them the remaining distance to shore. Kasahara was hospitalized overnight for exhaustion, from which he recovered.
