Nora E. Cantwell, 15, schoolgirl, saved Samuel K. Wilcox and Leo L. Wilcox from drowning, Northampton, Massachusetts, May 27, 1933. While Samuel, 9, was wading in the forebay at a manufacturing plant, he stepped into a hole, in which the water was eight feet deep, and went under the surface. His father, Leo L. Wilcox, 46, laborer, who could not swim, waded toward him, stepped into the hole, and was submerged. He took hold of Samuel, and their heads alternately rose and went under the water. Nora dived from the bank and swam to them, reaching them 15 feet from the bank. She grasped Samuel and started to swim toward the bank. Leo, who was almost entirely submerged, grabbed her ankle, and with great exertion she swam 10 or 11 feet to wadable water still holding Samuel. Leo released his hold of Nora and got footing close to them. 33077-2772
